The Christian Response to a Friend’s Betrayal
The betrayal of a friend is something we have all experienced. So we all know the profound pain it brings.
The Bible is a great guidebook for how to deal with a friend who has wronged you. It has plenty of cautionary tales and comforting words to those who find themselves grappling with this profound hurt.
Here we will delve into examples of betrayal by friends in the Bible, understand why they happened, and discover verses that provide solace and hope during times of betrayal.
This post is a great complement to The Biblical Importance of Friendship.
Examples of Betrayal in the Bible
David's Betrayal by Ahithophel (2 Samuel 15:12-17:23)
King David, a man after God's own heart, experienced betrayal on multiple occasions, including one by his trusted advisor, Ahithophel.
This is a two-for-one betrayal though: when David's son, Absalom, sought to overthrow him, Ahithophel joined the rebellion. His actions were deeply hurtful, as he had previously provided David with invaluable counsel and wisdom.
This example illustrates that betrayal can come from unexpected sources, causing profound emotional turmoil and leaving the betrayed individual questioning the loyalty of those they once relied upon.
Job's Friends Turn Against Him (Job 16:20-21)
The story of Job is one of immense suffering and resilience.
As Job endured trials and tribulations, his three friends—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar—initially came to offer comfort and support. However, their words turned accusatory and judgmental, wrongly assuming that Job's misfortunes were a result of hidden sins.
This narrative reminds us that even friends who intend to help may unintentionally add to the burden of the betrayed through misguided advice or assumptions.
True comfort comes from empathetic companions who stand by us through our darkest moments.
From this we also learn how to be better friends ourselves. It is important to be there for others facing hardship, because remember that someday you will be there too.
Joseph's Betrayal by His Brothers (Genesis 37:12-28)
The story of Joseph is one of resilience, forgiveness, and the reminder that God is in control.
Joseph was favored by his father, Jacob, which fueled jealousy and resentment among his brothers. In their bitterness, Joseph's brothers plotted to kill him but eventually decided to sell him into slavery instead. They deceived their father, presenting Joseph's bloodied coat as evidence of his death.
Joseph's betrayal by his own flesh and blood highlights the depths to which jealousy and envy can lead individuals to harm those they should protect and cherish.
However, from this story we learn the importance of perseverance and faith. Joseph’s journey from betrayal to becoming a powerful figure in Egypt demonstrates the importance of resilience and faith in difficult times.
Because even though you may not see it, God is always working for your good.
Judas Iscariot Betrays Jesus (Matthew 26:47-50)
Finally, you knew this one was coming. The most stunning example of betrayal in history is Judas Iscariot against Christ.
Despite witnessing Jesus' miracles and teachings as a disciple, Judas eventually yielded to greed. He conspired with the chief priests and elders to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. When the moment presented itself, Judas identified Jesus to the authorities by giving him a kiss. This act led to Jesus' arrest and subsequent crucifixion.
Judas' betrayal serves as a poignant reminder of how desire for material gain can lead individuals astray from the path of righteousness, causing immense pain to those they once called friends.
Verses Providing Comfort in Times of Betrayal
Now that we covered some examples of betrayal in the Bible, let’s look at some of my favorite verses that give me comfort when I have been wronged by a friend.
Psalm 55:12-14
"For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. We used to take sweet counsel together; within God's house we walked in the throng."
In times of betrayal, the pain is amplified when it comes from someone close to us. This psalm reflects the anguish of a betrayed heart, but it also acknowledges that finding solace in God's presence can help us navigate through these challenging emotions.
Psalm 27:10
"Though my father and mother forsake me, the LORD will receive me."
This verse reminds us that even if we experience betrayal from those closest to us, God's love and acceptance are unfailing. He is always there to comfort and embrace us in our times of need.
Romans 12:17-21
"Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, 'Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.'"
This is the most important thing I want you to take away from reading this post (in two parts): 1. do not seek revenge because 2. God is in control.
Instead, respond with kindness and to trust that God will ultimately deal with matters of justice.
This approach promotes healing and prevents the cycle of hurt from continuing.

Proverbs 17:17
"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
Amidst the pain of betrayal, it is essential to remember that genuine friendships exist—ones that endure through difficult times.
This verse assures us that true friends will stand by our side, offering their unwavering support and love.
This is one I come back to again and again.
It is so important to remember that genuine biblical friendships exist with people who truly love you.
Betrayal by a friend is an agonizing experience that has been present as long as humans have existed.
In times of betrayal, the Bible also provides comfort and hope. Verses like those from Psalms, Proverbs, and Romans remind us that God's love and guidance can sustain us through the pain and help us navigate the turbulent waters of human emotions. Moreover, the Bible teaches us the importance of forgiveness and leaving matters of justice in God's hands.
As we face the challenges of betrayal, let us draw strength from the examples in the Bible, both cautionary and comforting. By leaning on our faith and seeking support from true friends, we can draw closer to God and become better friends ourselves!
