How to Run from Your Problems the Right Way

In times of trouble and uncertainty, it’s natural (and even good) to run from your problems.  But only if you do it the right way.

Seeking refuge is a natural human instinct.

The term "refuge" refers to a place or state of safety, protection, or shelter. It is a haven or sanctuary where people can seek solace, security, and relief from harm, danger, or distress.  It provides a sense of physical or emotional security, offering a respite from adversity, turmoil, or threatening circumstances.

Finding refuge typically involves seeking comfort, support, or aid in a place or with someone that provides a sense of safety and well-being.

Enter Psalm 91:2:

I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

(Many of the Psalms use this description of God!)

But beyond the Psalms, the Bible overall provides profound insights into God's character, revealing Him as our ultimate refuge.

Because the only right way to run from our problems is to run to God.

This blog post explores the biblical depiction of God as our refuge, highlighting verses and narratives that illustrate His role as our source of comfort, protection, and strength. By delving into these timeless truths, we can discover a deeper understanding of the refuge God offers and how it can transform our lives.

God as a Strong Tower.

Proverbs 18:10 states, "The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe."

This powerful metaphor depicts God as an impenetrable fortress, offering safety and security to those who seek Him. Just as a tower provides protection from external threats, God's presence shields us from harm. In moments of distress, we can run to Him and find refuge in His unwavering strength and steadfast love.

God's Promised Deliverance.

Throughout the Bible, we encounter stories of God delivering His people from various trials and adversities.

One notable example is when God rescued the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

In Exodus 15:2, Moses proclaims, "The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." This verse reminds us that God is not only our refuge but also our deliverer.

Just as He rescued the Israelites, He promises to deliver us from the challenges we face, offering refuge in His saving power.

The Ever-Present Help.

Psalm 46:1 is one of my favorites: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."

This verse assures us that God is not a distant or indifferent deity but a present and accessible refuge. In times of trouble, we can find solace in knowing that He is with us.

His strength empowers us, and His presence brings comfort.

Regardless of the circumstances we face, God remains our constant source of help and refuge.

Shelter Under His Wings.

Psalm 91 continues what is quoted above with a beautiful depiction of God's protective nature, stating, "He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings, you will find refuge" (Psalm 91:4).

This imagery portrays God as a nurturing and sheltering presence, much like a mother bird shielding her young. It speaks of intimacy, care, and the assurance of His loving protection.

When we draw near to God, we find refuge under His wings, experiencing His tender care and unwavering guardianship.

Peace That Surpasses Understanding.

This one is a verse I constantly reference and pray.

In Philippians 4:7, we are encouraged with these words: "And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

This verse reminds us that finding refuge in God goes beyond mere physical protection. It encompasses a profound inner peace that surpasses human comprehension. This peace guards our hearts and minds, providing stability and assurance even in the midst of life's storms.

An Anchor of Hope.

Hope is a precious commodity that sustains us during difficult times.

As Christians, our hope is firmly anchored in God, who offers us an unwavering assurance of His faithfulness.

When the storms of life threaten to overwhelm us, we can find refuge in the promises of God's word. The Bible reminds us that God is our refuge and fortress, a refuge for the oppressed in times of trouble (Psalm 9:9).

Our hope in God enables us to face adversity with courage, knowing that He is working all things for our good (Romans 8:28).

Strength in Weakness.

Our moments of weakness and vulnerability, we often discover the true depth of God's strength. As Christians, we can take comfort in knowing that our refuge in God extends to our weaknesses.

The apostle Paul understood this truth when he wrote, "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness'" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

In our reliance on God, we tap into His limitless strength, finding refuge and empowerment to overcome the challenges we face.

The Rock of Refuge

The Psalms frequently depict God as a rock, a solid and unmovable foundation.

Psalm 94:22 proclaims, "But the Lord has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge." Just as a rock provides stability and security, God offers unwavering refuge.

(And again we see the Psalms describing God as a refuge!)

When we build our lives upon Him, we find a firm and unshakeable source of strength and protection, able to withstand the trials and tribulations that come our way.

The Bible provides us with a rich understanding of God as our refuge and the peace, hope, and strength we can draw from being in His presence.

From the strong tower to the sheltering wings, the Scriptures reveal His unfailing love, strength, and protection. As we embrace these truths, we can find solace, security, and peace in our relationship with Him.

In times of trouble, let’s run to the refuge of God, knowing that in His presence, we are safe and sustained. Don’t know where to start? Reading through the Bible in a year is a great place!
