I wrote a post a few months ago explaining what proffee is and why it is the easiest and most efficient breakfast. Here I build upon that and share my new favorite combinations (peanut butter coffee plus chocolate protein, anyone?)
Now that you have a preview of coming attractions, back to the basics.
I hope by now you have started combining protein powder/a protein shake directly with your coffee. This gives you a one-two punch of caffeine and protein to start your day with some solid energy.
Plus, if you have zero time in the morning or usually are not hungry, pouring a protein shake into your coffee is the easiest possible “meal” to have. Bonus points: you don’t need to add sweetener or milk!
After I wrote that post, I started drinking a lot more proffee. Even though I work from home, wake up early, and have a morning routine I absolutely adore, I much prefer to spend my morning time being productive, working through my to do list, getting work done before my team logs on, and writing this blog…to cooking breakfast. When I’m in a good groove working, I don’t want to interrupt myself to stop my grumbling stomach.
So I followed my own advice and started making proffee several mornings every week.
I particularly love it on mornings before I go cycling or running or something really intense or that requires a lot of endurance. I don’t want to eat before working out, so a protein shake is perfect for that. Plus the caffeine helps me really power through the workout!
And you don’t just have to pour a vanilla or chocolate shake into coffee! There are endless combinations of flavores for both protein powders and coffees!
Now that I’m an artist when it comes to creating these craft drinks (i.e. combining two ingredients with a spoon), I wanted to share some of my favorite combinations.
But before I do, I wanted to point out my two favorite protein brands and a note about pre-made shakes verses powders.
My favorite brands are Quest and Premier Protein.
Quest in particular I love because it was introduced to me by my brother, who is an elite runner. Food is truly fuel for him, so if he thinks it’s quality, it really is. So that’s what brought me to it. What kept me there is that it’s really, really good.
In general, my personal preference is getting powder from Quest and pre-made shakes from Premier Protein. But I suggest you try these with other brands if you prefer them!!
At the very least, I’d recomment having these two proteins to use with any flavored coffee you have (but we’ll build on these two in a few paragraphs!)
Does it matter if you use powder or pre-made shakes?
No! It’s just an extra step if you’re using a powder, because you’ll need to combine it with milk. I recommend not using a blender bottle though (those gross me out and aren’t as effective as my preferred tool).
For when you use powder, the best thing you can invest in (and in my opinion, is the most underrated kitchen tool ever) is a milk frother. I use it for my beet juice powder, daily greens, and moringa powder too!
I say underrated because for less than $7 you get something you can use every day to make ordinary everyday morning things feel luxurious. You don’t need to get a fancy one - just a regular basic milk frother has lasted me a year at this point!
Peanut butter coffee + chocolate protein = Reese’s PB cup.
Maple coffee + caramel protein = maple caramel candy.
Blueberry coffee + cinnamon protein = blueberry muffin.
Maple coffee + banana protein = banana pancakes.
Pecan praline coffee + cinnamon protein = something magical out of a Southern kitchen.
Banana coffee + chocolate protein (or vice versa) = chocolate-covered banana.
Apple pie coffee + cinnamon protein = apple pie, but with way less calories and more nutrition.
Pistachio coffee + peanut butter protein = a Nut Roll (underrated candy bar).
Raspberry coffee + chocolate protein = chocolate-covered raspberries.
Most fruity coffees + vanilla protein = {blank} and cream. Especially good with peaches and blueberry!
One final note, if fruit-flavored coffee sounds weird to you, I get it. I hate fruit-flavored desserts.
However, fruit-flavored coffee usually tastes like a muffin dipped in coffee! I highly recommend at least trying it once - you might surprise yourself with a new favorite!
