Is Thrive Market Worth the Membership Price?

Plus My Favorite Products!

This site contains affiliate links to products. I may receive a commission for purchases made through these links. However, this does not impact my reviews and comparisons. I highlight products I use and recommend to friends.

If you have any social media account, there’s a good chance you have seen ads for Thrive Market.  If you’ve been curious but haven’t yet looked into it, Thrive Market is a membership-only online store for groceries, cleaning supplies, vitamins, and more (even wine!) for health-minded consumers at lower prices than at other stores.  Many of the products are organic, non-GMO, and without other assorted garbage you don’t want to put into your body.

This of it as sort of a Costco or Amazon Fresh but healthier, or a cheaper version of Whole Foods.

Yes, this place requires a membership to shop, so let’s talk about whether that cost is worth it.

There are two options:  either an annual subscription for $59.95 or month-to-month one for $12.  The annual one is obviously cheaper and comes out to only $5 per month, or the cost of one small vanilla bean sheet cake from Trader Joe’s.  (If you live near a TJ’s, this is something you absolutely must try.)

You will fill out a few questions as to your preferences, which helps them give you recommendations, and then you’re ready to go.  Something important I should mention is that after signing up you don’t think the membership is worth it, you have 30 days to get a refund.

In other words, you essentially get a 30 day free trial of Thrive Market!

$5 per month is very reasonable for the benefits you get:

  • Convenience.

The most obvious one, you can restock your pantry without putting on pants!

  • Everyday low prices.

Items are priced to be 30% off the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price).

  • Price matching.

In fact, if you find an item cheaper elsewhere, they’ll match it!

  • Sales.

On the deals page, you will find daily special sales.

  • Auto-ship discounts.

If you set up automatic orders, you will save an additional 5-10%.

  • Free gifts.

In addition to the one you get for signing up, as a member you will regularly get free gifts (full-size, not samples) on products you love!

  • Thrive Market brand.

Just like in a regular grocery store, there is a private label brand that is even cheaper than its competitors.

As with anything though, this service has some cons:

  • Unlike going to the store yourself or getting Instacart, shipping takes a few days.  So this is more suited for weekly orders/monthly restocks than it is for last minute party prep.

  • Also, shipping is not free under $49.  But really, when is the last time your weekly grocery bill was less than $50, inflation or no?

  • Thrive Market only sells frozen and canned produce, not fresh.  I don’t really see this as a con because I prefer to select my own produce - I don’t think I’m overly picky, but some people just grab the apples and throw them in a bag rather than squeezing to be sure they’re not mushy.  For those less particular than I am about fresh fruits and vegetables, this lack of produce could be annoying.

Maybe even better than the price advantages and convenience are the brands they carry.

I am guessing you already love some of them, and something I love about this is that the site will also make recommendations that lead you to new things you wouldn’t necessarily have found on your own.

Here are a few of my favorite products available on Thrive Market that you likely already know (and probably love) as well:

Smart Sweets:  these are actually a good alternative to Swedish fish, plus a solid dose of fiber.

Nut Pods unsweetened almond and coconut creamer:  the caramel one is perfect for your morning coffee.

Garden of Life collagen powder:  I also put a scoop of this in my coffee every morning – it has more collagen and protein than most brands I’ve seen, giving your skin and joints an extra youthful boost to start your day!

Banza pasta:  all the benefits of chickpeas (protein and fiber!), none of the weird texture or taste funkiness of pasta alternatives.

Kodiak Flap Jack Cups:  pancakes in a bowl, with protein!

Overall, I think the cost advantages, convenience, and selection of products outweigh the cons, so the membership cost more than worth it!

You will also get a FREE gift (up to a $50 value) when you purchase a membership (select from pre-made frozen meals, sustainable seafood, or clean wines).
