The thing you learned about in your fifth grade science class is your body’s best friend when it comes to detoxifying and fighting inflammation!
This translates to better health, better skin, and weight loss.
To review what you learned back in fifth grade, chlorophyll helps plants generate energy from the sun (remember photosynthesis?).
It is also what gives plants their green color, which you know all about if you read Why We Need to Eat the Rainbow.
Now that we have that behind us…
Why should you care about chlorophyll, and what can it do for you?
Since chlorophyll is like your red blood cells, this is almost like a blood transfusion. Hemoglobin in your red blood cells carries oxygen in your blood just like chlorophyll does within plants. The increased oxygenation does wonders for your body, including things like extra energy and better skin!
Also, like many plant-based natural little miracles, it has antioxidants, fights inflammation and cancer, and is linked to lower blood pressure. Not bad for something that comes in a handy little dropper that you can put into a glass of water in the morning!
Chlorophyll provides a host of body benefits:
Builds blood
Fights inflammation
Detoxifies your liver
Supports a healthy metabolism
Improves gut health
Boosts energy
Fights cancer
Lowers blood pressure
Fights bad breath
Improves skin health
I’m going to focus on the top two reasons I started drinking chlorophyll water. And this is for all of you who are trying to get healthier or lose weight (or both):
1. Liver Detoxifier.
As I discussed in Supercharge Your Fat Burn with this Organ, you know that the liver is your body’s filter. When it is busy ridding your body of too many toxins, it has less time and energy to burn fat, which is also its job.
When you give your liver support in doing its job for survival (i.e. removing substances toxic to your body), it can focus on turning on fat burning enzymes. That then becomes your liver’s number one job!
Another note about detoxification in general: with all the pollution and junky stuff in processed foods, toxins get stored in fat cells, so the more fruits and vegetables and chlorophyll you get, the more that stuff gets flushed out. You have to get rid of these toxins in fat cells before you can burn it!
2. Gut Health Champion.
Chlorophyll feeds the good bacteria in your gut. A healthy gut means lower inflammation, which is linked to lower levels of cravings for junky stuff!
Usually when I hear about detoxes, my eyes glaze over because it’s a scam and probably is being sold on a late night infomercial. (Please don’t buy into detox programs.)
Chlorophyll, however, is a natural source that supports the body’s natural detoxification process. It gives your organs a little helper to make their jobs easier!
When I wanted to boost my chlorophyll consumption, I took a two-prong approach:
1. Eat more green plants!
It is so easy to get more with this little bad boy, chlorophyll that comes in a little bottle with a dropper that you can add to your water in the morning. As an added bonus, the bottle is small enough to throw in your purse or gym bag without taking up too much room. Another use for chlorophyll water is for special occasion repair.
If like to keep electrolyte water on-hand, to recover from a long run or last night’s wine (if you don’t drink often, you know the pain of the morning after one glass), these chlorophyll drops also include vitamins, A, B12, C, and D, in addition to potassium and electrolytes.

I have written multiple times about how much I like drinking lemon water in the morning. Once I started reading about chlorophyll though, I added it to my good morning routine as well!
One bottle of this will last you 4 months at once glass per day, so your total cost for liver detoxification is about $5 per month, or $0.17 per serving. Click here to try my favorite chlorophyll drops!
