Six Drinks to Add to Your Morning Routine

Add these to your morning routine to give you something to get out of bed for and start your day off in a healthy way! A healthy, productive morning you enjoy is likely something that will become a habit and a lifestyle, and good choices early encourage more of them through the day.
If you are looking to become a morning person or just enjoy mornings more, the key is building a routine with elements that you look forward to (you could perhaps even call them rituals?). Since many of us are motivated by what we consume, I thought it would make sense to highlight some drinks that are perfect to start your day off in a healthy and somewhat indulgent fashion.
1. Chlorophyll water.
When I read about the benefits of chlorophyll water, I immediately ordered some (read more about that here!). From the liver detox benefits to the increased oxygen to your cells (i.e. more energy and better skin), this is an amazing, painless way to get additional benefits from a simple glass of water!
Not to mention, the green color (yes, the same compound that gives plants their color) of the water is really pretty. There’s something about this that just makes plain water feel fancy!
It’s pretty simple – you just add some drops to a cold glass of water and stir. Most drops are tasteless, but some can be flavored with a slight taste. This one is my favorite and has a minty taste!
2. Lemon water.
If you are someone who does not love drinking water, this is for you. You are dehydrated in the morning – you’ve been asleep for 8 hours (or more realistically, less, but that’s still a long time without water!), so it’s time to hydrate. Adding half a lemon to your first cold glass of water not only makes it easier to drink, but it feels a little like spa water!
Along with tasting good, lemon water comes with a huge hit of vitamin C, which helps you do everything from fighting a cold to fighting cancer. This is a great way to add some additional nutrients to your day…all while encouraging you to drink more water.
P.S. Dehydration can make you feel tired, so drinking more water will fight that sluggishness in the morning.
3. Coffee.
Coffee is your best friend if you need caffeine. Even the placebo effect - many of us cannot function without the smell and taste of coffee in the morning. That time has become a ritual in and of itself.
Might I challenge you to up your coffee game though? I have two suggestions: collagen powder and proffee.
I recently discovered the beauty of adding a scoop of collagen powder to my first cup. Not only does collagen have protein and a ton of health benefits for your total body (read more about that here!), but it actually makes the coffee creamier. Combine that with a natural sweetener (my favorite is monkfruit sweetener), and you are good to go.
That’s right, collagen makes your coffee taste better AND gives you a boost of protein! (Real protein from amino acids, not a gram or two.)
Another protein-packed option is proffee.
Proffee is just half coffee, half protein shake.
This is drinking your breakfast with all the added benefits of caffeine. If you hate eating in the morning, this is a great way to get some nutrients and protein in your system without having to sit down to a meal. Also, it is REALLY good if you pick the right protein shake. (I love Quest’s vanilla, already pre-made.)
4. Tea.
If you want to get a caffeine boost but don’t like coffee, tea is a great option! It is also loaded with antioxidants and can help lower inflammation and blood sugar and helps fight cancer. (Read more about the benefits of drinking tea here.)
Also, the ritual factor is high with tea. There is something that seems really fancy about using proper loose leaf tea in a strainer to brew your cup. Taking your tea game to the next level from throwing a bag into a cup of hot water feels indulgent but takes essentially no time or financial investment (no fancy machines required).
My favorite online tea shop is the Art of Tea.
I like it because I know nothing about the nuances of tea, only what tastes good, so their tea quiz sent me to the perfect blends for me.
If you are looking for an experience that feels sophisticated even when you’re in pajamas before you brush your teeth, their loose leaf collections are a great treat!
5. Beet juice powder.
Now hear me out here – even if you hate the taste of beets, this is worth trying. Perhaps even more so if you hate beets. Like it or not, beets are really good for you, but that flavor turns a lot of people off.
Enter flavored beet juice powder, which masks the earthy (i.e. dirt) flavor.
(For the record, I used to hate beets but eventually trained myself to like them and now eat them any way I can get them. There is hope!)
This is a powerhouse in general, but it is especially beneficial for lowering blood pressure, boosting liver health, and helping you power through a workout. For more on the benefits of beet juice powder, read my post here.
I like drinking this in the morning because it’s a great energy boost. (FYI, this also makes it good for the 3 PM slump, and far better for you than anything you can get in a vending machine.) So if you are not a coffee or tea person, this is a great alternative!
6. Smoothies.
This is a no brainer for squeezing some extra servings of produce into your day? I always feel better (even if it’s a placebo effect) when I eat fruits and vegetables first thing in the morning.
Unfortunately, I am a terrible smoothie maker. For some reason, I absolutely cannot combine ingredients in the proper quantities that results in something that doesn’t taste like lawn in a bowl. (Which is frustrating, because I love to cook and do that fairly well. Smoothies are a fickle mistress.)
So what’s even better than starting your day with a few servings of produce that tastes good? Not having to dirty a blender in the process!
This is why Evive smoothies are a staple in my freezer. These are frozen cubes of smoothies that don’t go into a blender, just into a glass with some water or milk. Then you shake. That’s all you have to do!
The great thing here is that it feels like you put together a smoothie with all the proper proportions of the proper ingredients without even turning on a blender. You can even go back to bed and drink it while you read, if that’s what you want to do with your morning time!
Hopefully you will try one or more of these tweaks to your morning routine that you love and make it a habit!
Remember that it is important to have something to look forward to in order to stop hitting the snooze button (like having some coffee in bed while you watch Netflix?)! Also, if you set yourself up with some healthy options in the morning, you’re starting your day off on the right foot that will encourage healthy choices for the rest of the day!
